7 DICAS DE TRAIL RUNNING

São 7 dicas essenciais para dominar os trilhos de trail running com confiança e em segurança, e desfrutar de uma aventura inesquecível e muito gratificante.

Trail running is a sport that combines a connection with nature with the joy of running and overcoming
the unpredictable challenges of natural trails. Paulo Ferreira, an award-winning ultra-trail runner and founder of Tributus, helped us put together 7 tips so that those new to the sport can enjoy their runs to the fullest and have a truly rewarding experience.

1- Get to know the area

It’s a good idea to research the area where the trail you plan to run is located; even better if you can visit the area in person—this will help you understand the terrain and its elevation profile, and prepare properly for the run.

2- Choose the right shoes

In the article on trail running, we explained that getting started in this sport doesn’t require specific equipment, as is the case with other sports (some even have dress codes, such as ballet, tennis, or golf), but we did highlight the importance of footwear.
In fact, it makes all the difference to choose and invest in trail running shoes with good cushioning to absorb impact and good traction to provide better grip on the terrain, reducing the risk of injury.

3- Stay hydrated

Staying hydrated is crucial, especially when hiking long trails on hot days. Water is one of those things you really have to bring with you, even if it means carrying extra weight, as Paulo Ferreira recommends.

4- Be prepared for climate change

As Paulo Ferreira says, “In the mountains, anything can happen; everything can be fine, and then suddenly [the weather changes] and everything goes wrong due to bad weather.” And indeed, it’s true—the unexpected happens, even during a single hike. That’s why it’s best to bring a backpack with water, warmer clothes, and a raincoat. If the trail is in the high mountains, then it’s absolutely essential to carry a basic kit that includes these items.

5- Know the emergency signals and have a GPS tracking system

Learn about trail markers for hiking and trail running, as well as basic first aid and emergency response techniques. And be sure to bring a cell phone with a fully charged battery and GPS.

6. Respect nature

Trail runners and athletes cite the connection with nature that trail running provides as the main reason they prefer this sport to road running. Nature, with its beauty and challenges, ultimately plays the leading role in this sport, so we must respect it. Therefore, let’s strive to minimize our impact and help preserve the environment in which we run: don’t leave trash on the trails and follow the signs to keep the flora and fauna untouched.

7- Enjoy the scenery

Finally, our last suggestion is to take in the scenery: take a moment, look around, and enjoy it. “The trail gives us the privilege of being in unique places. Our country has breathtaking landscapes, and some of them can only be reached by trail—they’re unknown to most people,” Paulo explains.
